The new Mercedes-Benz GLC: SUV and Coupé

Source: Motorpress / Mercedes-Benz South Africa

The GLC Coupé was launched in 2016. 1.5 million of the mid-size SUVs have been sold to date globally.

Modernity, strength and versatility: This is what the design of the GLC and GLC Coupé stands for. The design idiom of the GLC follows the design philosophy of sensual purity and illustrates the carefully considered interplay of aesthetics.

Redesigned all-LED rear lights are also included as standard.
The strengths of this mid-size model include outstanding driving characteristics both on and off the road, spaciousness, practicality and comfort. The numerous upgrades also benefit the GLC Coupé, which combines the sportiness of a coupé with the practicality of an SUV. Agility and intelligence. The Mercedes-Benz GLC has been in the market for four years, and is the brand's most popular SUV mode

The exterior design is characterised by sporty features. A distinctive off-road look is accentuated by muscular surface contours and striking details such as the chrome trim that now continues from the front end to the rear as standard, the redesigned headlamps and the heavily contoured radiator grille.

The GLC Coupé marks itself out with its dynamic appearance and elegant lines. This model shows how harmoniously the design features of a coupé can be reconciled with those of an SUV, with a descending roofline, a greenhouse that blends perfectly into the silhouette, the character line in combination with the distinctive chrome strip on the high beltline, and the muscular shoulders.

Both models are now equipped with LED High Performance headlamps as standard. Their contours have been significantly changed, and they are now smaller and flatter. This makes the torch-like outline of the daytime driving lights even more prominent, and the typical Mercedes-Benz light signature even more recognisable. MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are available as optional equipment. Redesigned all-LED rear lights are also included as standard.

In the interior, a high quality of finish and high-grade materials such as open-pored wood are combined with user-friendly controls. As standard, both versions of the GLC feature the modern, learn-capable infotainment system MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience. Its strengths include intuitive control using a variety of inputs such as touch control, gesture control (with the help of the MBUX Interior Assistant) and the optimised voice control system
("Hey Mercedes") as standard. The MBUX augmented reality function for navigation adds useful navigation information to a video image of the surroundings.

The driving assistance systems have been considerably extended. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steer Assist provide even more comfortable support to help the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is adjusted automatically ahead of bends or junctions. Active Steer Assist helps with forming an emergency corridor and with changing lanes. The risk of potential collisions can be reduced by the turn-off function of Active Brake Assist, by automatic braking if the driver fails to see oncoming traffic. Also new is Trailer Manoeuvring Assist, which provides assistance when manoeuvring in reverse.

As an alternative to the standard AGILITY CONTROL suspension, the steel DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping is available. The damping is individually controlled at each wheel depending on the driving situation, speed and the condition of the road surface.

Different suspension characteristics can be chosen using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch: in the two setups "Sport" and "Sport+" the damping is more taut, while ride comfort is maximised in "Comfort" mode and "Eco" mode makes for particularly economical driving. The driving modes also modify the engine, transmission and steering characteristics.

The AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension can be chosen for even more comfort and variability. In combination with the standard DYNAMIC SELECT, this also makes it possible to lower or raise the vehicle level by 15 mm.

The new range of engines: powerful efficiency

The GLC comes to the starting line with completely new engines. The GLC and GLC Coupé are powered by the new generation of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. In the GLC 300 4MATIC, the previous M 274 engine is replaced by the four-cylinder M 264, while the four-cylinder OM 654 diesel engine replaces the preceding OM 651.

More stringent requirements and lower limiting values – the four-cylinder OM 654 diesel engine was designed with a view to further reductions in consumption and emissions, as well as lower operating costs and improved engine performance.

To reduce emissions as efficiently as possible, the most important exhaust aftertreatment components are arranged directly at the engine. Partly by virtue of the additional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalytic converter with an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) in the exhaust tract, and even in demanding driving situations, this engine already meets the Euro 6d standard (RDE/Real Driving Emissions Stage 2).

Major pillar in the SUV success story

The GLC premiered in 2015, emphasising its positioning as an SUV in the C‑Class model family. The GLC Coupé was launched in 2016. 1.5 million of the mid-size SUVs have been sold to date globally.

At present Mercedes-Benz is successfully represented with seven models in the SUV segment (GLA, GLC, GLC Coupé, GLE, GLE Coupé, GLS, G-Class and GLB to be introduced in 2020). The SUVs are a major structural pillar in the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio, and greatly contribute to the growth of Mercedes-Benz.
