Effortlessly conquering the toughest of terrains

The South African 4×4 & Outdoor Show is regarded as one of the benchmark motoring and lifestyle events in South Africa. This year’s show is set to take place at the Zwartkop Raceway, in Centurion, from 25 to 26 August 2018.

Mercedes-Benz Vans Southern Africa – hosted by McCarthy Menlyn - will be showcasing the first of a new kind X-Class, a bakkie that is rapidly proving to be the perfect combination of luxury and ruggedness. At the show, the X-Class will be dominating in the X220d and X250d guises.

In the X220d, the high-torque engine generates 120kW and in the X250d no less than 140kW. Both engines are characterised by quiet, low-vibration running and excellent power delivery coupled with low consumption figures, making it the most ideal vehicle for exploring unchartered territories.

This is the first bakkie to convincingly combine the versatility of a double-cab with the luxury of a passenger car. The X-Class is robust with exceptional load capacity and off-road capability, but yet it's also aesthetically pleasing, dynamic to drive, comfortable and safe.

Those in attendance at this year’s 4×4 & Outdoor Show will be drawn to the Mercedes-Benz X-Class stand, where the two design lines, namely the POWER and PROGRESSIVE offerings will demonstrate just how suited they are to the off-road and 4x4 sector. Mercedes-Benz Vans, with the all-conquering Sprinter 4x4, has long been an integral part of the 4x4 segment, and the division continues to prove beyond a doubt just how capable its vans are. This will be further reiterated by the all-terrain X-Class.

Powerful and efficient engines

The rugged bakkie offers two powerful and efficient four-cylinder engines to deliver much-needed performance for off-road challenges. The high-torque common-rail diesel drive system with a displacement of 2.3 litres is available with a choice of two power outputs.

In the X220d, the engine generates 120kW and in the X250d no less than 140kW. Both engines are characterised by quiet, low-vibration running and excellent power delivery coupled with low consumption figures.

The twin-turbo engine comes with one high pressure and one low pressure turbo charger set in series to ensure immediate response times, unmatched pulling power and strong acceleration, all essential for successful 4x4 outings.

Six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission

The X220d is available in rear-wheel drive, while the X250d is offered in rear-wheel drive or with engageable all-wheel drive, with low-range, ideal for tough conditions. Power is transferred via a six-speed manual transmission. Its special feature is the wide transmission spacing, with a short first gear for maximum torque – which is ideal for 4x4 applications. This design makes allowance for typical situations such as hill starts with a fully-loaded 4x4 trailer in tow.

Dynamic and comfortable driving on and off the road

Before 4x4 enthusiasts arrive where they feel most comfortable – the bush – they have to travel on the country’s roads. With its five comfortable seats and a durable interior, the X-Class serves as both a family vehicle as well as the perfect bundu-basher. The X-Class can haul a payload of up to 1.1 tons and has a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tons.

Durable accessories make it the perfect vehicle for the 4x4 sector, and these include styling bars, side bars, hard tonneau cover and roll cover, as well as a canopy. Other items available include a bed liner and load-securing rails for items such as jerry cans, camping tents and recovery tools.

PremiumDrive as standard

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class comes standard with the manufacturer’s PremiumDrive, designed to give 4x4 customers complete peace of mind. It is one of the leading full maintenance plans in South Africa and ensures superior cover for 100 000 km/6 years, whichever occurs first. For a nominal cost, customers have the option of extending the maintenance plan up to a maximum of 180 000km/8 years, whichever occurs first.
