It’s time to top up with anti-freeze and head to the Nasrec Expo Centre south-west of Jo’burg this Sunday, July 7 2019, for the mid-winter edition of The Classic Car Show.
A number of seriously-collectable, freshly-restored muscle cars are set to make their show debut at Nasrec, taking pride of place amongst an expected 1 000-car mix of American, British and European classics.
“It has become a tradition at The Classic Car Show for a number of specialist car builders to show their new creations at our show for the first time in public,” said Paulo Calisto, founder and organiser of The Classic Car Show.
“Most of these new top-drawer muscle cars and street rods will be located just outside Hall 5, although there will be some extra special cars inside Hall 5 as well.”
The open-air fields at Nasrec will be populated with a heady mix of European and Japanese classics too, to stand alongside the huge contingent of American “Fins of the Fifties” brigade that celebrates the era of Rock n Roll!
A vast selection of VW buses, otherwise known as Kombis, will remind us that the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival, held in New York State in August 1969, is but a month away. Old VW Kombis became the symbol of the hippie movement across the planet after Woodstock in 1969, as did, to a lesser extent, the humble VW Beetle, simply because it was a car that free-wheeling hippies could afford.
Talking of anniversaries, another birthday celebration that is just around the corner is the Mini’s 60th, and the Mini Club has stated that a large contingent will be at The Classic Car Show to remind classic car lovers of the huge worldwide Mini celebration taking place on August 24. The South African Mini Club will be holding its celebration in Cullinan over the weekend of the 24th of August.
It was in late August 1959 that the first Mini made its debut in England, and just a few months later these cars were being assembled in South Africa too.
A feature of The Classic Car Show in recent years has been the huge interest in the so-called young-timer classics, such as VW Golfs, Toyota Corollas and Conquests and BMW 3 Series machines. These young-timer classics have their own special display at Nasrec on Classic Car Day, under the Germany vs Japan banner.
There will be plenty of custom pick-up trucks, Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers and Chevrolet Bel Airs to keep traditional Americana fans happy, as well as European rarities, such as the Ford Taunus and two-stroke DKWs. Ford fans will, as usual, make a strong showing with examples from the 1960s such as the Mk I Cortina, the Mk I Escort from the late 1960s and the Mk II Escorts from the 1970s, and the immortal Ford Capri, which incidentally also celebrates its 50th birthday this year.
• The owners of classic cars will be admitted free of charge to the Classic Car Shown on July 7, 2019. Admission will be free for the driver and one passenger, while extra passengers will have to pay a full admission fee.
The Show runs from 8 am to 4 pm. Classic car owners can gain access to the display area from 7am.
• Admission prices are R60 for adults if the ticket is booked through Computicket, or R80 at the gate. Entrance for children under 12 will be R20.
• As usual there will be a full complement of entertainment, food and drink laid on by the organisers, with live rock music being a traditional feature of the show. There will be entertainment for children such as kiddies go-karts and jumping castles, and helicopter rides will also be on offer.
• Once again the Classic Car Show Prawn Festival will be a feature of the event.
• There will be a host of stalls selling car-related and lifestyle goods at The Classic Car Show
• This Sunday there will also be drifting, with passenger rides on offer in a drift car at the Nasrec skid pan.
