As South Africans, we have a lot to be proud of. Our rainbow nation draws in people from all over the world for its natural beauty, world-class cities, and unique wildlife. The diversity of South Africa is unmatched compared to many other countries. In September this year, the 5FM Drive team, led by Nick Hamman, launched their sixth edition of the Heritage Tour, a series of broadcasts focused on showcasing the country’s top destinations.
Suzuki proudly supported the 5 Drive Heritage Tour, which ran from the 5th to the 30th of September. The team visited all nine provinces across the country to discover the amazing people, food, art, and hidden gems that celebrate the rich culture that South Africa has to offer. Listeners could follow the tour on-air, on social media, as well as the 5FM app.
Nick Hamman says that the aim of the tour was “to get out on the road and meet audiences where they are, helping to reinforce 5FM’s legacy as the country’s leading youth radio station, but also getting to know those we speak to more intimately.”
We caught up with the 5FM team to hear all about their epic experiences, and here’s a round-up of their Heritage Tour adventures.
Magaliesburg and the Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng
The team spent the first night of the tour in a boutique hotel near the Cradle of Humankind. The hotel served some delicious and unique food, and the South African spring flora of the area was magnificent.
Potchefstroom
Next up was Potchefstroom, where the friendly and buzzing student community made the visit all the more exciting. Potch has a strong agricultural economy and some of the most interesting museums.
Bloemfontein
Similar to Potch, Bloemfontein also has a big student community, and although each of these communities is vastly different, they both share an unconditional love for South Africa. From fascinating museums, delectable restaurants, and beautiful botanical gardens, Bloem was well worth a visit.
Kimberly, Northern Cape
The team fell in love with Kimberly after spending just one night there. A huge part of the Kimberly culture is preserving its heritage. The highlight of their stay, though, was visiting the Africana Library and listening to the tale of how two people claiming to be researchers vandalised the oldest book in their possession, about 20 years ago.
Carnarvon and the SKA Project, Northern Cape
For the final leg of the tour, the team found themselves in the Karoo. Although towns like Carnarvon and Britstown are still grappling with the effects of the pandemic, it was amazing to see how happy and willing they were to open up their hearts to visitors.
5FM and Suzuki: A match made in heaven
Suzuki was involved in the tour to showcase South African attractions, the breathtaking places that people can go, all the experiences and memories that can be made, and to just simply show the beauty of our country.
Designed to be the boldest car to ever hit the road, the Suzuki Ignis is a dream drive for any adventure, and that’s why it was the perfect choice for visiting most of the destinations on the tour.
This tour reinforced the concept that heritage is actually made up of many things including culture, personal style, family traditions, and spiritual beliefs. Our heritage should be something that is celebrated every day, as it offers us a moment of reflection, and more importantly, allows us to choose the tools that we will use to build the heritage of future generations.
